none of these have yet occurred, but they may

I have lived three hundred years, and I long to die.
But death is no longer possible.
I am immortal.

I present now my story, full of mystery and intrigue;
rich in irony, and most satirical.
It is set deep in a possible future, so none of these events have yet occurred, but they may. Be warned, lest you end as I. In this tale, I am a fake god by occupation and a magician, by inclination. Merlin is my hero! I am the puppet master. I manipulate many of the characters and events you will see. But I am invented, too, for your entertainment and amusement.
And you, poor creatures, who conjured you out of the clay? Is God in show business too?

Imagine what you'll know tomorrow

- Humans, for the most part, don't have a clue. Don't want or need one. They're happy. They think they have a good bead on things.
- Why the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it.
- A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals. You know it. Fifteen hundred years ago, everybody 'knew' the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody 'knew' the Earth was flat. And fifteen minutes ago, you 'knew' that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll 'know' tomorrow.

Energieerhaltungssatz

You study, you become enlightened. I study, I become confused.

- There must be something you wanna do.
- Of course. I wanna discover.
- Discover what?
- Everything. I want to discover why I know what's right and still do what's wrong. I wanna discover what happiness is and what value there is in suffering. I wanna discover why men go to war and what they really say deep in their hearts when they pray to God. I wanna discover what it is that men and women feel when they say they love. You see, there's enough to keep me busy. It's hard for you to understand someone like me. Everything is so clear for you. You always know exactly what you must do and you do it.
- Exactly.
- You're different from me. You study, you become enlightened. I study, I become confused. You love, you marry. You believe, you act. There's a war, you serve.
- How wonderful it would be if I really answered to your description.
- You do, I tell you.
- Shall I show you how wrong you are?
- I know you. I'm not wrong.
- Do you know why I'm going to the war? You think it's because I think that Napoleon is a monster? You think I believe that we have any business fighting Austria's battles, 2000 miles from home? You think that I think Russia will be a greater nation when this war is over?
- Then why are you going?
- Because I'm married to one of the most loving and honorable and attractive women in Moscow and I can't stand it.

reality design

- What is the most resilient parasite?
A bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm?
- Uh.. What Mr. Cobb is trying to say...
- An idea.
Resilient. Highly contagious.
Once an idea has taken hold of the brain, it's almost impossible to eradicate.
An idea that is fully formed, fully understood, that sticks.
Right in there somewhere.

multiple-layer-dreaming design

- "I will split up my father's empire."
Now, this is obviously an idea that Robert himself would choose to reject which is why we need to plant it deep in his subconscious. The subconscious is motivated by emotion, right? Not reason. We need to find a way to translate this into an emotional concept.
- How do you translate business strategy into emotion?
- That's what we're here to figure out.
- Robert's relationship with his father...
- ...is stressed, to say the least.
- Can we run with that? We suggest breaking up his father's company as a "screw you" to the old man.
- No, because I think positive emotion trumps negative emotion every time. We all yearn for reconciliation, for catharsis. We need Robert Fischer to have a positive emotional reaction to all this.
- All right, well, try this. Um.... "My father accepts that I want to create for myself, not follow in his footsteps."
- That might work.
- Might? We're gonna need to do a little better than "might."
- Thank you for your contribution, Arthur.
- Forgive me for wanting a little specificity, Eames.
- Specificity? Inception's not about being specific. When we get inside his mind, we're gonna have to work with what we find.

- On the top level, we open up his relationship with his father and say, "I will not follow in my father's footsteps." Then the next level down, we feed him, "I will create something for myself." Then, by the time we hit the bottom level, we bring out the big guns.
- "My father doesn't want me to be him."
- Exactly.
- Three layers down, the dreams are gonna collapse with the slightest disturbance.
- Sedation. For sleep stable enough to create three layers of dreaming we'll have to combine it with an extremely powerful sedative.

- Good night!

- The compound we'll be using to share the dream creates a clear connection between dreamers whilst accelerating brain function.
- In other words, more time on each level. Brain function in the dream will be about ten times normal.
- And when you enter a dream within that dream, the effect is compounded.
